Fig trees of the Catalan countries and my roof |
This is a page dedicated to the fig world that gradually I built with pleasure. My intention is not only to collect the existing information, an important part of this work is based on my own experience. I would like to contribute to improve the esteem for this tree with this task, the last living evidence of the recent past. A few decades ago, I worked as a farmer. Not living up to the job I dedicated myself to work in computer systems. Those past memories of the fresh fruit and quality led me to try different kinds of fruit trees where he could care for and enjoy in my terrace. From all that I tested, the better acclimatized is the fig tree. Coll de Dama in my terrace. Now I enjoy in my roof a collection that gives me figs from June to October. It is enough with a pot about 10 liters per pick figs are good quality, even since the first year! . In our countries, its remain missing and to identify many of the formerly cultivated varieties. Growing fig tree is very simple and it grows in virtually any environment like cannot do other fruit tree. The fig tree is a Mediterranean tree, but there are varieties adapted to adverse climates. Some varieties even support winters to 14 º C below zero and it gives fruits at summer! The fig tree is a thankful and endured, it is easy to care, surely it rewards us with its beautiful company and a delicious figs. Many old varieties of fig trees in our countries had disappeared or are about to do so. The fig tree is the last to die in the vineyards and wasteland. Often re-sprout from its trunk to remind us that one day it gave shade and fruit to men and cattle. What was its name? Who could tell us their story? With globalization and the chaos of our farmers may we do not know anything anymore. It must to preserve the diversity of fig trees, a symbol of the Mediterranean, making it also preserve our identities. The fig trees and its fruits have enriched our Catalan language and culture as any other tree it have done. It is amazing to see how part of the list of fig DCVB, (thesaurus Catalan, Valencian, Balearic), after centuries its still kept their names, which is confirmed through identification by ADN. Put a fig tree in your life!
